The large plasma screen at the end of Magneto's office was turned to the news as the elder watched it, having been paying closer attention to the news lately. Usually the TV was well hidden behind a metal panel, making the already large office look even bigger. Though bigger tended to mean more inviting, Magneto's office was anything but that. The metal decorating instantly took away any warmth, and the large metal desk that seperated Magneto from the rest of the room made it clear that they were to come to him, not the other way around. The only artwork in the office was the large portrait of Magneto hanging on the wall, a sort of propaganda for whomever came into his office. Though they were few and far between.
Now, watching the TV, Magneto's focus was on the report concerning Neverland. He despised the whole idea of the place form the beginning, and wished he could have done something to help, but it wasn't the right time. Other things were more important. The stack of papers on his desk detailing the newest arrivals to Genosha needed to be dealt with before anymore arrived. They had already been placed in homes and added to the list that needed jobs, ensuring that they would have a smooth transition from their old home to their new one.
Turning off the TV, the metal quickly grew out over the nook where the TV had just been, competely concealing it from sight. Picking up the first folder of papers, Magneto's pen hovered over to him as he took it from the air, signing off on the paperwork. Being the ruler of a nation was a tedious job, but it had to be done. Though Magneto's thoughts were elsewhere, on Sinister really. Later Magneto would speak with Mystique and formulating a plan against Sinister and doing what they had talked about for the past three years in destroying the concentration camp and usurping Senator Kelly from power. But all in due time. For now, his thoughts were needed here, in helping those he could.

Rogue's bursting into the office did not alarm Magneto in the least, having felt someone coming for a bit of a distance. He did always love that Rogue wore those combat boots, plenty of metal in them to sense. Without looking up at her, Magneto continued signing off on papers until Rogue sat down, her boots suddenly in his face. Just as soon as she put them up, Magneto heard the clunk of them hitting the ground through the hole that suddenly appeared in the desk under her feet. Once off his desk, Magneto reformed it into it's correct shape.
Letting go of the metal pen, it did not hit the desk as one would think, but instead capped itself and returned to it's proper holding place. Closing up the folders that were opened, Magneto stacked them neatly before looking up at Rogue. "I am not your father, and I do believe that your complaints are with Mystique, not me. If your mother chose to put you under my son's supervision, she must have had a reason for it." He had openly retired from the Brotherhood, though Magneto still whispered in Mystique's ear every now and then. This was one of those times, but Magneto would not admit to it. Rogue was one of their newer members, and hadn't yet proven herself, due to the registration act interferring.
Leaning back in his chair, the metal bin that held all the folders hovered into the air and moved to a side of the room as the wall opened up to reveal other stacks of documents. Once inside, the metal wall closed up again. "You are still new Rogue, and have proven yourself to be a wild card in the past. It is no wonder why you are still under supervision. And with the way you just behaved, I am even more not surprised. Now I am a very busy man."

Silence had never been one of her daughter's strongest suits, and Mystique did not need to hear the distinguished Southern drawl to know that Rogue was currently ripping off Magneto's head as she strutted down the vast hallway towards her old mentor's office space. Even given the fact that her daughter was clearly ticked off did not give Mystique a moment's pause of confronting her, and as she appeared in the doorway, her own husky voice interrupted the proceedings in time to hear Magneto dismiss Rogue.
"Magneto is right," she replied in accordance to his last statement regarding Rogue's status as a powerful, but potentially fatal wild card. Fatal for her inferiors if they did not get the job done right, that is. "I appreciate your ability to respond quickly and think on your feet. However, impulsive recklessness is the flip side of that coin, my daughter. You need to exert better self-control." Let Rogue protest all she liked. Mystique was far more concerned with her safety, and letting her run loose on the streets unchecked was the quickest way to get her killed. The last time her daughter had nearly died, she'd been willing to sacrifice a child to save her. And she would do it again. She only hoped she wouldn't have to.
Magneto might perceive this as weakness. But they both knew Rogue had suffered discrimination, just as they both had. Her bitterness was the reason for her impulsiveness. Mystique's protective maternal instinct stemmed from a desire to never again see another mutant child be so terrified of the world around them. All her life, she'd been viewed as something else. An animal, lesser than the superior homo sapiens. No longer. And she would do anything to make certain those who judged were the ones who paid the price.
Mystique relaxed her stance beside her daughter's chair, frowning disapprovingly at the combat boots propped up on his desk, and met Erik's gaze levelly. "I've had no success with obtaining information on Senator Kelly. My current disguise enabled me to penetrate the UN's pecking order. I'm going to have to target another figure in order to get in deeper. I was quite nearly finished assessing the best possibilities when Wolverine decided to stop in." She turned her yellow eyes now to Rogue, staring her daughter down. "And it wasn't for tea. Would you care to tell me where you met up with him?" Never mind that the scars had healed, of course. Now that a member of SHIELD knew of her current hiding place, she was going to have to start fresh. Her only security was that the only piece of hardware she had wired into the condo- the computer systems- had already self-destructed upon the intrusion. She would need another place to access confidential files.

"I didn't exactly get the opportunity to ask him as he was throwing me into the godforsaken walls," Mystique's tone was clearly unimpressed and undaunted. "But I'm guessing that it must have something to do with you, my dear. He seemed rather more vicious than usual, even for him." Posturing herself with her weight on one hip, both hands resting on the waistband of her black combat leather clothes, the blue-skinned mutant looked like the epitome of death. The cold, hard metal of her gun in its holster was the only weight she felt against her hip, and she was not, like most others of the Brotherhood, anxious about wearing metal around Erik.
Stiffening now, she looked Rogue sharply in the eyes. "I never said that you would not lead a squad. I simply stated that you were not yet ready. Trust me, my daughter. When the time comes, you will get your opportunity. You knew what you were signing up for when you rejoined us. Be patient, do your job and get Senator Kelly, and you will reap the rewards." Mystique was poised halfway between her daughter and mentor, although all attention was focused on Rogue. "Consider it your incentive for proving yourself. That is all I will say on the matter."

It wasn't long before Mystique came in, taking Rogue's full attention. Mystique was always a wonder, keeping her youth and her attitude throughout the years Magneto had known her. It was no wonder why she was his most trusted 'adviser' on Genosha. As the two argued, Magneto simply watched, seeing the traits in Rogue coming out that informed both him and Mystique that she wasn't ready to lead her own squad yet. She was too headstrong, didn't think before she talked and acted, always impulsive.
"We shall have to extend a welcoming hand to Wolverine then, tell him that he is most welcome in my office." That right there made it a trap, so very few mutants were allowed in his office. Only Mystique and Charles could come and go freely, even Quicksilver needed to show the proper respect and be invited in first. Standing up, Magneto walked around his desk to stand beside Mystique, looking down at Rogue the way disapproving parents would. "Mystique is correct Rogue, you need to really prove yourself first. You've shown us that you can stick around and say you're part of this team, but you have yet to truly prove it. Senator Kelly is and always will be a prime target for that." Looking to the blue woman beside him, Magneto smiled warmly to his old friend, the only person he ever really smiled to. She knew that she was special to him, held a special position in his ascent to world domination. And once he received it, she would stay by his side until the very end. "My dear, you do look lovely today, but where have you been lately? You have been missed."

It was getting more and more difficult for Mystique to keep her temper in check. She had mastered staying cool and detached in confrontation, whether it be with her daughter or her inferiors. Familial disputes did not bring out the best in her. "Your concern for Logan is touching," she spoke scathingly, unappreciative that Wolverine's housewarming call did not seem to affect Rogue in the slightest. "Don't forget where your loyalty lies, my daughter." She was silent as she watched Rogue storm out, knowing that their argument was not finished. Even Erik's interjection on her behalf would do nothing to patch up the rift she could feel between herself and Rogue. Their love-hate relationship had always been rocky, even at best, and lately, it seemed to be getting worse. Rogue's free-thinking independent spirit would not tolerate her mother's self-control for long.
As her yellow eyes narrowed in contemplative thought, she looked up at Erik standing beside her and returned his smile. "Thank you, my dear. A woman does try," she laughed, leaning against him to slip her arms around his waist. "Now that I've been driven out of my direlect condo by Wolverine, it looks like I'll have to remain here until I can get another hardware system up and running in a new location downtown." The wicked glimmer in her eyes told him that in spite of her unrelenting work, she was in no rush to hurry off again now that she was back on Genosha. "I suppose I must apologize for the lack of communications, my dear. I had nothing to report as yet." She preferred to keep most of her operation details separate from him, in the case any governmental authorities should think to try obtaining information from him. He could deny having any knowledge of her whereabouts or plans, and Mystique asked for assistance only when she absolutely needed to.

Rogue was in one of her moods again, one of the moods that Magneto hated. She was proving herself to be nothing more then a spoiled brat who wanted a top position just because her mother was the leader, which was not how the Brotherhood ran. So what did Rogue do? Came whining to him, only to find out that she still wouldn't get her way, so she stormed off in a huff. Magneto had tired of Rogue's games long before.
However, his attention was turned back to Mystique and how she was planning to stay around Genosha for a bit. "There is always a bed for you in my palace." The two had an odd relationship, one that no one could ever describe, and possibly never wanted to describe. Putting his arm around Mystique, the metal door to the office slammed shut, keeping prying eyes and ears away. "I understand, though if you plan to do something, the time is now. Their government is distracted by Mister Sinister right now, it'll be easy, or should be at least. But be careful, with all those sentinels walking around, scanning people. They will discover you if you get scanned." Magneto himself had no idea what kind of technology the sentinel program used, but he knew it wasn't good for mutants. "I only wish that I could join you, but that will happen when the time is right." Refusing to register meant that Magneto had to live out his days elsewhere, though he did not mind. He did however mind that he was now a diplomat and a ruler in his own right, and was still being forced to register should he go overseas to America.

Mystique couldn't help feeling pleased at his expression of concern for her- it was a refreshing change from her own daughter's lack of it. "I'm careful enough," she replied, giving no notice as Erik shut the office doors. "Although it's getting just a bit inconvenient. They're programmed to detect any exertion of powers. And unfortunately, that's the only way I can walk around the city in the open to pass myself off as one of them." The disgust in her voice could only have been referring to the rest of the non-mutant population. Her current disguise was going to have to be scrapped- she'd been posing as an Italian operative within the UN, and Mystique doubted she could get any more information as Velia Moreno.
"I need to move on to someone else... which was partly what I needed Rogue for." Her hands had now found themselves clasped behind his back as she leaned her neck back to look up at Magneto. She'd always thought of him as a rather handsome man, even given his aging years, and certainly she found him far more worthy than any other man she'd had to seduce using her powers. He was also the only man around whom she had no need to change her appearance. Mystique knew others considered their relationship something of an enigma, but then, she had never cared with what her daughter or anyone else had thought. She only knew that they were a perfect match.

With the Registration Act passing, there was too much funding going to the sentinel program, they had developed very advanced robots now. Of course, they still had not learned, the robots were still made of metal. The day that Magneto returned to America would a day that they would never forget. "Then maybe it is time to bring a fresh face to the Brotherhood, one that has never been seen by the media before. Groom them yourself, and send them in." The other side of that plan was that even if the person got caught, Mystique would not get captured, which was always a good thing to Magneto.
"Rogue will come around in time, but in the meantime, I suggest you follow her. If she is meeting up with Wolverine, there is no telling who else she may be meeting up again. The Cajun is still in France, correct?" The whole mutant world had known about the southern couple, and Magneto feared the hold they had over each other. Gambit was a charmer, and was one of the reasons that Rogue had even come back to the Brotherhood. If he returned now, everything from the past three years would be ruined. "Get to him before he gets to Rogue." Mystique would certainly know the connection to bringing up Gambit as well.
Pushing some of Mystique's red hair behind her ear, Magneto realized that he looked at her the way he did Magda. But the situation was so different, it wasn't the same as with his dead wife. No, they had a relationship that deep down, they knew could not go public. They had to pretend that they worked for the same cause, and that the destruction of one of them would not destroy the other. In the eyes of the Brotherhood, they were the ultimate power couple that wasn't really a couple. "This world will be ours soon enough."

She nodded in silent agreement as she met his eyes. It was not that Mystique feared the sentinels; they only constrained her ability to move freely. Here on Genosha, she did not have to constantly be looking over her shoulder, and she sorely missed that freedom whenever she had to return to the States to carry out business.
But in France, she would have no problem. Mutants were not required to be registered, and she would be afforded discretion to move about as she pleased. Gambit had always a thorn in her side, and her frank disapproval of his relationship with Rogue had done nothing to keep the two apart. If Rogue's powers didn't kill him first, he'd blow her up with his ridiculously dangerous playing cards by accident. The situation forboded a negative outcome all around either way. She would not allow them to reunite and risk Rogue leaving the Brotherhood once again.
"Yes, he is still in France," she responded to Erik before she could let her thoughts drift too far from the tasks she had at hand. "Whether he'll stay there is uncertain. He still has ties to the X-Men." And Rogue, but she refused to mention the two of them in the same sentence. Mystique and Gambit had a sore history of confrontational encounters involving her daughter that she did not care to recall. "Naturally, I will take care to keep my eye on Rogue. She's far too short-tempered as it is now. I would hardly put it past her to do something stupid."
Follow Rogue. Find Gambit. Recruit a new face. Capture Senator Kelly. It was all in a day's work for the shape-shifter, and yet she began to feel herself being stretched thin. No one would ever catch Mystique complaining either- let the dogs do the whining, not her. She did it all for the man standing in the room with her, working to pave the way for him to return to the States, trying to replenish the Brotherhood's numbers. As he stroked her hair, she closed her eyes at the contact. Rogue and Gambit had made a foolish mistake, being so public with their tortured romance. Now was not the time for regrets on her part, no matter much she loved Erik. She'd never said as much out loud to him, and she probably never would. It was simply safer that way.

Mystique was a wonder, she had the ability to do everything Magneto ever asked of her, and surpass his expectations as well. That and more was why she would be by his side when this all came out in the end, when mutants reigned supreme and Magneto the most supreme of them all. He was, after all, one of the most powerful mutants that ever walked the Earth.
"Good, lets hope it stays that way. Three years is a long time for them to be apart, I'm sure you can dig up someone from those years who would prevent him from returning to Rogue. If not, bring him around to our cause. He plays dangerously, but he is a great asset to have. Or dispose of him. I do not care, just as long as he does not ruin this for us. We can't afford to lose Rogue again."
Rogue was even more valuable then Gambit could ever be. Rogue could be Gambit if needed, though Magneto would not suggest that just yet. After the incident with Ms. Marvel, this was not the time to suggest Rogue fully absorbing more mutants. In time, however, he would bring it up with Mystique. "Rogue herself still has ties to the X-Men. We must be very careful now, with the X-Men beginning to gather again once more. We must stay a step ahead of them and out smart them every opportunity we get. If not, we will fail, and our dream will never be realized. Furthermore, the rest of the world will turn to registering mutants. Genosha will be devastated from warfare once more."
In Magneto's mind, all of mutant life rested in their hands, whether the mutants knew it or not. Magneto would pave the way, he would keep them safe. "You must be careful around here as well. I do not believe that Charles suspects anything after three years together, but he may. Do not let your guard down."

"Consider it done." Mystique straightened herself in his arms as she opened her eyes again, yellow, pupiless orbs gazing back at him. "They won't find each other again if I have anything to say about it." Risking estrangement from Rogue seemed a small price to pay when considering what was in her best interests. And she could be certain that smooth-talking con artist fell a few feet short of that category. Disposing of him would be the tricky part, but she would just cross that bridge when she got to it. Rogue's tendency for extreme loyalty to past connections muddied the waters just a bit.
She shook her head, and placed her hand against his cheek. "I promise you, I would never allow that to happen. I will not fail you or our cause." Her smile promised victory, but for a moment, her eyes were tinged with pain, so that if Erik had not been looking directly at her, he would missed it as she asserted her usual fiercely determined expression, which discouraged others from crossing her. It quickly vanished and she was the lethal femme fatale once more, combat ready to do as he wished.

Magneto could always count on her for anything, and she always delivered. Alone in his office with her, Magneto couldn't help but feel the attraction, though they never gave in. They hinted and teased and played, but never truly gave in. Magneto feared the worst if they did. Would his children accept it? Would Rogue? All three were valuable members to the team, and to lose them all was simply not worth it. Not until the end result was accomplished.
"I have full trust in you, my dear. I always have. I know that you will never let me down." Even with his mutantion slowing it down, he was aging far too fast for his own liking. When this was over, Magneto would be an old man, older then he already was, and Mystique would still be young and vibrant. It was every man's dream, provided Mystique still found him attractive. Leaning down, Magneto lightly kissed her forehead. Showing affection was not a strong point for either of them. "Soon my dear, soon."

The unspoken crossed between them, and the silent understanding they both shared did not quell the resentment within Mystique that, were it not for a world of prejudiced, pathetic homo sapiens so terrified for their own self-preservation, things might have been very, very different. But regrets were simply a waste of time and energy, both of which she needed at the moment. Returning her smile and a nod, she looked down at the infernal piece of metal which had started vibrating against her hip. Flipping open her cell, she murmured only one word.
"Rogue." The inevitable would have to be faced, and although she was momentarily irritated that her sparsely occuring time alone with Erik had been rudely interrupted, she knew that it would be better to resolve any and all misunderstandings between her and her daughter as soon as she could. Slipping the small piece of technology back into her belt, she gave him a brief peck on the cheek. "I'll keep you informed when I can," were her last words before she left the office. She would likely not see him again for another few weeks now.
Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

Children always had a knack for interrupting important meetings. Magneto couldn't count the number of times that his children had barged into his office or home, uninvited, ranting about something gone wrong. As long as it was Quicksilver, Magneto could easily turn him back on his way. But Scarlet Witch? She had inherited her father's temper, though not his self-control, and was a deadly force to fight with. His children, however, were at least respectful, unlike Rogue. She stomped around, yelling and screaming whenever she wanted, and wouldn't be satisfied until she made everyone else miserable.
And now she was interrupted once more, in the form of a cell phone message. Magneto had half a mind to crush the phone and tell Rogue that Mystique didn't get the message, but he didn't. Mystique probably had valuable contacts on that phone that he could not destroy. Instead, he nodded his approval of her departure and returned to his desk, sitting behind it. The endless piles of paperwork had to be finished sometime.
